today was a superb day at work.. did absolutely nothing! all i did was chat wid friends from bangalore and Kh online! Recharged the phone again! Sigh.. i thought i wouldnt do it in this month but i guess the messaging got the better of me! Lol.
Hmmm… today was the storyboard meeting and as usual, i was ill-prepared! Had a few ideas but they had already been explored or qritten about! This tragedy happens in every story meet! I think that all the ideas are good but they either get shot down or are written about already! The only solace is that everyone faces the same dilemma but thats no excuse! Not for me atleast! I’d like all my ideas to be argued upon and then selected!!
I was chattin wid T today upon the issues facing the open source movement and why MS is ‘percieved’ to be ‘bad’ in this world.. If you look at it on face-value, MS makes some of the best OS software out there.. anything MS *just works*, out of the box, just like that! With linux, you spend more time working ON the computer than with it (these were Ro’s words, very true!) Its sad but it is the very blunt truth. I spend more time tinkering my ubuntu box to function and work the way i want it to than i do with windows..
Then there is the eternal problem of returning to the terminal everytime i wanna d some admin permission stuff. In windows, u log-in as admin, linux doesnt let you run around like that with godly powers! You have to change a few things (instructions avail on net) and only then can u log-in as admin everytime! I like the world at my feet and i detest the inaccessability of the root login via normal methods in linux! If you though ubuntu allowed windows users to ‘seemlessly’ migrate to linux u are sooo dead wrong! If the person does not have a fast enough internet connection then he wont be able to download anything! moreover the offline help system sucks! Its better online and most community members on the forums are quite forgiving of newbie questions.. even if they are asked 15 times everyday!
Another thing i dont like in linux is the ‘dependency’ system.. i mean wtf!!! I want to install gimp.. the terminal says that to install it you need to have 6 other dependencies (as an example) and asks if i want to download those as well.. i say ‘do i have a choice there? if i want to run the proggie, i need the dependencies!’. Then it says ‘one of those 6 dependencies requires 1 more dependency, do i want to download that?’ buy now am cursing already! I mean come-on.. how lame is that? I just want Gimp damn it!
Another problem with linux is its completely proprietory EXT3 filesystem.. I mean at least have it at FAT32 so u can read contents of the folder from a windows box! Sigh..
Nevermind.. what would I do without all that tinkering around.. i’d get bored to bits here! Hail linux!
